Who Were Rubber Rodeo?
Rubber Rodeo formed in 1980 in Providence, Rhode Island, initially made up of students from the Rhode Island School of Design, including vocalist and guitarist Bob Holmes, vocalist and keyboardist Trish Milliken, synthesist Gary Leib, pedal steel guitarist Eddie Stern, bassist Doug Allen and drummer Barc Holmes. The band gained early local attention with a striking 1981 cover of Dolly Parton's Jolene, blending synthy new wave production with a theatrical cowboy aesthetic that The Boston Phoenix noted made the band seem smart enough to find hipness in songs neglected by new wave audiences as too quaint or too corny.
About She Had To Go…
Recorded at Normandy Sound and produced by John Doelp, She Had To Go… followed the band's well received 1982 self-titled debut EP, continuing their distinctive fusion of synthesizer, organ and drum machine textures with pedal steel guitar, mandolin and violin. The three track EP includes the title song alongside a cover of Ennio Morricone's The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly theme and the original Forbidden Valley, demonstrating the band's playful commitment to a sound J.D. Considine would later dub cowboy pop in his review of their debut album Scenic Views. The EP arrived on the independent Eat Records label the year before Rubber Rodeo signed to Mercury Records and released that acclaimed full length debut, earning MTV airplay and a Grammy nomination for their innovative long-form music video.
