Pokey LaFarge is an Illinois-born singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and actor known for a distinctive style that channels the sound of early 20th century American roots music, from old-timey country and ragtime to blues and jazz, often performing in the dapper dress of a 1930s troubadour. He first drew wider attention touring as support for Jack White in 2012, and has since built a devoted following through steady touring and a catalogue stretching back to his 2006 debut Marmalade.

After years of criss-crossing the country in search of a home, LaFarge settled in Mid-Coast Maine, where he began working twelve-hour days on a local farm, a change of pace that unexpectedly catalysed a burst of songwriting. Co-produced with Chris Seefried and Elliot Bergman and recorded across studios in Los Angeles and Chicago, Rhumba Country broadens LaFarge's usual palette with mambo, Tropicalia and rocksteady influences layered over his retro Americana core. The ten track album moves from the shuffling opener One You, One Me through the horn-driven For A Night to the whistling, gospel-tinged closer You Make My Garden Grow, inspired directly by his time on the farm.
