Who Was Jack Rose?

Jack Rose was an American guitarist born in Fredericksburg, Virginia, who first gained attention in the 1990s as a member of the drone and roots band Pelt before building a celebrated solo career in acoustic guitar music. Self-taught, Rose developed a style that fused the American primitive tradition of John Fahey and Robbie Basho with ragtime, blues and Indian classical influences, releasing nine acclaimed solo albums in the space of eight years. Rose died suddenly of a heart attack in December 2009 at the age of 38, shortly after completing this album.

About The Black Dirt Sessions

Recorded across sessions in August to October 2008 at Jason Meagher's Black Dirt Studios in upstate New York, the album grew out of a working relationship Rose and Meagher developed during a joint tour with Meagher's band D. Charles Speer & The Helix earlier that year. Spanning six extended tracks, including the nearly epic Cross The North Fork, the record is widely considered Rose's most complete work, bringing together the traditional, raga and ragtime threads that ran through his catalogue into a single, fully realised statement. It was released on 10 April 2009 in a limited edition of 2021 vinyl copies via Three Lobed Recordings.
