Critical Reception

The best Carolan album I've heard so far, Derek Bell keeps the sound very authentic by using mostly a traditional wire-strung harp.
The Session (listener review)
Bathed in echo, the notes rise up peaceful and ordered, from the very first album entirely devoted to Carolan's music.

Who Was Derek Bell?

Derek Bell, born in Belfast in 1935, first trained in oboe and English horn before beginning to seriously study harp in his early thirties, while managing the Belfast Symphony Orchestra. He would go on to become the celebrated harpist for The Chieftains, first appearing on their landmark 1975 album The Chieftains 5, where he also introduced the tiompán, the Irish hammered dulcimer, to the group's sound for the first time. Beyond his work with The Chieftains, Bell recorded six solo albums, and his dedicated championing of the Irish harp is widely credited with helping elevate the instrument from near extinction to one of the most beloved instruments of Celtic and folk music today. He died suddenly in October 2002 following minor surgery in the United States.

About Carolan's Receipt And Turlough O'Carolan

Recorded and released in 1975, Carolan's Receipt was Derek Bell's debut solo album, and holds the historical distinction of being the first record ever devoted entirely to the music of Turlough O'Carolan, the blind Irish harper and composer who lived from 1670 to 1738 and remains one of the most significant figures in the history of Irish traditional music. Bell used a variety of different harps across the fifteen tracks to suit different moods, at points even dubbing three harp parts simultaneously, and was joined on select tracks by fellow Chieftains Martin Fay and Sean Keane on fiddle, Michael Tubridy on flute, and Paddy Moloney on uilleann pipes and tin whistle. The album moves through pieces including Lady Athenry, Maire Dhall, Sir Festus A Burca, Seoirse Brabazon and the poignant closer Carolan's Farewell To Music, offering listeners an intimate, historically significant survey of one composer's enduring legacy within the Irish harp tradition.
