Who Was Colin Wilkie?
Born in London in 1934, Colin Wilkie began his musical life playing drums in jazz and dance bands before teaching himself guitar and moving toward folk music. In 1960 he opened his own folk club in Bromley with friend John Glen, hosting guests including Alex Campbell, Redd Sullivan and Martin Winsor, and that same year met English folk singer Shirley Hart at the Sutton Folk Club, forming a musical and personal partnership that would last decades as the duo Colin Wilkie & Shirley Hart. The pair performed extensively at the influential Burg Waldeck festivals in Germany, and Wilkie eventually settled permanently in the Zabergäu region of Germany, where he remained based for the rest of his life, hosting the radio programme Colin's Folk Club on Austrian station Ö3 from 1974 to 1981.
