Who Is Boise Cover Band?
Boise Cover Band began in 2002 as an informal project by Doug Martsch, frontman of acclaimed indie rock band Built To Spill, who invited local musician friends to his home studio for improvised jam sessions while his main band was on hiatus following 2001's Ancient Melodies of the Future. The lineup settled around guitarist John Mullin, longtime Built To Spill soundman Ian Waters on drums, and later guitarist Ned Evett, winner of the 2003 North American Guitar competition and inventor of the glass-necked fretless guitar, with Martsch himself stepping away from his usual lead guitar role to play bass.
About Unoriginal Artists
After losing interest in pure improvisation, the group turned to learning a set of cover songs, recorded in 2003 at Martsch's home studio, The Manhouse in Boise, with longtime Built To Spill producer Phil Ek engineering the live tracking. The resulting album takes on an eclectic set of covers, including Dobby Dobson's reggae number Loving Pauper filtered through Built To Spill's indie rock lens, David Bowie's Ashes To Ashes, The Pretenders' Chain Gang reimagined as a poppy instrumental, and a closing rendition of Georgios Trakis' Ta Magia Sto Pegadi. Martsch has since cited Unoriginal Artists as one of his personal favourite records he has ever made, though it remained a merch-table rarity for nearly two decades before its official 2021 wide release.
