Who Was Bobby Bare?
Bobby Bare, born in Ironton, Ohio in 1935, began his career as a guitarist in a small country band after working as a farm and factory hand. His earliest brush with fame came in an unusual way: shortly before being called up for military service, he recorded a self-written song called All American Boy and sold the recording and all copyrights outright to Fraternity Records for 50 dollars. The label released it not under Bare's own name but under the pseudonym Bill Parsons, and the song became a hit without Bare receiving credit or royalties. After his military service, Bare tried again, writing songs for the film Teenage Millionaire, and scored his first proper hit under his own name with Shame On Me in 1962, followed by the enduring classic Detroit City the following year.
About Folsom Prison Blues
Released in 1968, this album centres on Bare's own rendition of Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues, arriving the same year Cash's own legendary At Folsom Prison live album cemented the song's status as a country and rock and roll standard. Alongside the title track, the ten song collection includes Try To Remember, Silence Is Golden and No Sad Songs For Me, reflecting Bare's reputation as one of the musicians who helped bring a folksy, storytelling sensibility into mainstream country music during the 1960s.
