Who Are Adolphe Sex Et Ses Machines?
Adolphe Sex Et Ses Machines are a seven-piece band from Charleroi, Belgium, built around singer and guitarist Matthew Hardison and drummer Nico Leonard, who also form the heart and soul of two of Belgium's leading rock steady and boss reggae bands, The Moon Invaders and The Caroloregians. Despite those Jamaican-influenced day jobs, there is no trace of reggae in the sound of Adolphe Sex, a project built entirely around raw, unfiltered rhythm and blues raunch.
About This Debut Single
Released on Stag-O-Lee Records, an EP-format four track release that would come to be known as the Machine EP, Machines showcased the band digging into vintage R&B and rock and roll covers, including two wild tittyshakers originally by Pacific Northwest rockers The Wailers, a rendition of Torture Rock by The Rockin' Belmarx, a sleazy take on Sam McLain's Baby Come Home, and an awesome cover of the Burnt Toast & Black Coffee classic, previously recorded by artists including Shorty Long and Mike Pedicin. The single proved an immediate success, selling out its pressing rapidly and prompting a follow-up 7 inch, Baseball, released via Soundflat Records, and eventually a full debut LP, Poudre A Muscle, which further leaned into the band's Hammond-organ-driven, Yeye-influenced garage-beat sound, drawing comparisons to French icons like Nino Ferrer, Jacques Dutronc and Serge Gainsbourg.
