Critical Reception
Who Is Behind Apple Brains?
Apple Brains is the brainchild of Los Angeles based musician Allen Bleyle, whose free-for-all, lo-fi indie rock style brought a genuinely fresh and unexpected energy to the children's music world. Rather than delivering a preachy or instructional record, Bleyle built Get Fruity!! around playful, sometimes gleefully weird songwriting, drawing critical comparisons to the innocent enthusiasm of Jonathan Richman and the general kookiness of the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band.
About Get Fruity!! And Its Notable Guest Musicians
Spanning twelve tracks including the manic sing-along opener Apple x3, the story-song Peanut Butter And Jelly How They Met Song, the wobbly-melodied Water The Loveliest Beverage, and the ridiculously catchy Ba-na-nas, Get Fruity!! plays out as a genuine concept album celebrating fruits, vegetables and healthy eating, right down to the carnival-like waltz of The Stone Fruit Salute, complete with pump organs and slide whistles. Beyond its charming, kid-focused concept, the record carries genuine indie cred through its roster of guest musicians, drawing players from The Devil Makes Three, Feathers, Pretend You're Happy, and Witch, the doom-tinged side project of Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis, a genuinely surprising and delightful connection for a children's record. The vinyl edition was pressed on green apple colored wax and packaged with a coloring book style inner sleeve and decal sheet, adding to its distinctive, playful presentation.
