Who Were Pinkard & Bowden?
James Sandy Pinkard and Richard Bowden were introduced by their mutual friend, producer Jim Ed Norman, and quickly discovered a shared love of writing comedic country songs. The pair formed a duo and released their debut album Writers In Disguise in 1984, which entered the US Country chart at number 47 on the strength of parody songs reworking hits by artists including Sammi Smith and Peter, Paul and Mary. Pinkard & Bowden went on to earn a reputation as genuinely irreverent country satirists, becoming the first act in the genre's comedy tradition to carry explicit content warnings on their record sleeves, a distinction that also led to the duo being banned from appearing on The Nashville Network. Sandy Pinkard passed away in July 2025.
About PG-13
Produced by Jim Ed Norman alongside the duo themselves and released via Warner Bros in 1985, PG-13 followed Writers In Disguise with a further set of parody songs and original comedic material, though the album ultimately failed to chart. The single Mama, She's Lazy, a reworking of The Judds' hit Mama He's Crazy, became the duo's most successful single from the record, reaching number 39 on the US Country chart. As with much of the duo's catalogue, several songs on PG-13 were co-written by Tim Wilson, who would go on to build his own career as a comedian and musician through the following decades. The duo continued recording into the early 1990s, releasing Live! in 1990 and Cousins, Cattle And Other Love Stories in 1992, before a 1993 compilation, Gettin' Stupid, brought their satirical catalogue to a wider audience through television mail-order advertising.
