Pressing Specifications
Who Were Ian & Sylvia?
Ian & Sylvia were a Canadian husband-and-wife folk duo who became among the most celebrated acts of the early 1960s folk revival, admired for the distinctive blend of their individual voices, which critics have described as lifting each other to a spiritual level rarely matched by other folk harmony acts. Their influence extended well beyond their own recordings, shaping a generation of Canadian singer-songwriters including Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, both of whom later cited the duo among their formative influences.
The Story Of Four Strong Winds
The album's title track originated when Ian Tyson, encountering a young Bob Dylan at the Greenwich Village bar Kettle Of Fish in autumn 1962, heard Dylan play an early, unreleased composition believed to be Blowin' In The Wind. Inspired, Tyson decided he could write a song of his own, composing Four Strong Winds in roughly 20 minutes at the New York apartment of the pair's shared manager, Albert Grossman. The song went on to become Tyson's signature composition and a significant hit for Bobby Bare on the US country charts in 1964. The album also features Ian & Sylvia's rendition of Dylan's Tomorrow Is A Long Time, recorded years before Dylan released his own version, making it the first ever commercially released cover of a Bob Dylan song. Beyond these two standout tracks, the album draws on a rich mix of traditional bluegrass, spirituals, gospel and hillbilly material, alongside the French-Canadian standard V'la L'Bon Vent and songs from the Cecil Sharp collection of Appalachian folk songs of British origin.
