Who Was Charlie Poole?
Charlie Poole was born in 1892 and formed a trio with fiddler Posey Rorer, whose sister he married, and guitarist Norman Woodlief, calling themselves the North Carolina Ramblers. After auditioning in New York City for Columbia Records, the group recorded their breakthrough single, Don't Let Your Deal Go Down Blues, on 27 July 1925, launching a run of recordings that would prove hugely influential on the development of country music. Historian Bill C. Malone praised the group's sound as controlled, clean and well-patterned, noting that no string band in early country music equalled the Ramblers' musicianship. Poole died in 1931, but his influence has endured; the Grateful Dead's song Deal drew directly from Don't Let Your Deal Go Down, and singer-songwriter Loudon Wainwright III paid tribute to Poole's life and music with his 2009 album High Wide & Handsome.
