Who Was Fiddlin' Arthur Smith?
Born on a farm near Bold Springs, Tennessee in 1898, Arthur Smith learned fiddle young and made his solo debut on the Grand Ole Opry on 23 December 1927, quickly becoming a regular member. In the early 1930s he formed The Dixieliners with the McGee Brothers and his daughter Lavonne on piano, touring alongside Uncle Dave Macon and the Delmore Brothers and performing signature tunes like Walking In My Sleep and Pig In The Pen. His self-penned song Beautiful Brown Eyes became widely recorded after Roy Acuff popularised it, leading other artists to record it believing it was public domain; Smith successfully sued and won a settlement. After stints with the Shelton Brothers, the Bailes Brothers and even a brief Hollywood film career in the 1940s, Smith eventually returned to Nashville, where in 1957 folklorist Mike Seeger arranged a celebrated reunion recording session with the McGee Brothers.
