Bringing together banjo, lap steel, violin, clarinet, bass clarinet, cello and drums, the quintet developed a quixotic and often haunting sound organically over roughly two years of playing together before recording their debut full length.
About Wester Easter
Recorded at Gypsy Farm, a rural studio run by The HUMMS' Zeke Sayer inside a reconfigured Lavonia, Georgia theater that once hosted country legends including Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash and George Jones, Wester Easter unfolds across thirteen tracks that shift wildly between moods and genres. Opener Dead Man's Pose bursts in with second-line rhythm and ascending woodwinds, while a recurring set of instrumental interludes titled around the word Transylvania give the record a strange, ghostly undercurrent, culminating in the five-minute mini-opus Transylvania Jam. Elsewhere, the slow-paced banjo and lap steel of You're Always Gonna Be Able To Get One More and the lyrically gripping Every Day I'm Building A Fool anchor the album's more song-based moments, described by one reviewer as sounding like The Lonesome Crowded West reimagined as a spaghetti-western film score.
