Who Are The Disciplines?

The Disciplines formed in Norway when guitarist Bjorn Bergene, bassist Bard Helgeland and drummer Claus Heiberg Larsen, veterans of the band Briskeby, set out to make music simpler and more direct than their previous project. Ken Stringfellow, best known as a member of power pop favourites The Posies and later a touring and recording member of the reformed Big Star, signed on as lead singer, and the band released their debut album Smoking Kills in early 2009, scoring a substantial Scandinavian hit with the single Oslo.

About Virgins Of Menace

Following a 2009 lineup change that brought in new drummer Ralle Vilnes of the band Emmett Brown, The Disciplines entered the studio in mid-2010 to record their second album in the arctic fishing port of Tromso. The resulting twelve tracks find Stringfellow adopting a punkier, glammier persona than his work with The Posies, delivering venomous energy on Fate's A Strong Bitch, which features a guest vocal from no wave icon Lydia Lunch, and cocky swagger on The War's Not Over. Elsewhere, the band nods to influences including the Buzzcocks on Complicated Times and stretches into brief prog rock textures on Everything Forever (Pig Wars), all wrapped in Bergene's catchy, hook-driven guitar work.
