About The Album
Recorded across sessions from August to December 1964 and produced by Don Law and Frank Jones, Orange Blossom Special found Johnny Cash at a particularly eclectic moment in his catalogue. The album mixes country and folk standards such as The Long Black Veil, When It's Springtime In Alaska and Danny Boy with train songs, frontier ballads, and Cash's own sense of social conscience on All Of God's Children Ain't Free. The title track, a cover of Ervin T. Rouse's classic fiddle tune about the real-life luxury passenger train of the same name, became a hit single in its own right, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.
The Bob Dylan Connection
Perhaps most notably, the album includes three Bob Dylan covers: It Ain't Me Babe, performed as a playful mariachi-tinged duet with June Carter; Don't Think Twice, It's All Right, delivered with baritone earnestness; and Mama, You Been On My Mind, which Cash's version actually released before Dylan's own recording saw official release, making Cash's take the song's first commercial appearance. Cash had already shown his admiration for Dylan by borrowing the melody of Don't Think Twice for his earlier song Understand Your Man, and the two artists would go on to develop a well documented mutual respect and friendship in the years that followed.
