Pressing Specifications
Who Is The Vernon Spring?
The Vernon Spring is the recording name of Sam Beste, a London based composer, pianist and producer. Beste built an early reputation as a member of Amy Winehouse’s touring band as a teenager, before working across a wide range of jazz and production collaborations. He began releasing solo material as The Vernon Spring in 2019, issuing his debut album A Plane Over Woods in 2021 followed by the EP Earth, On A Good Day in 2022. Both releases found a devoted, if niche, audience drawn to Beste’s melancholic, piano led style.
About Under A Familiar Sun
Under A Familiar Sun, released on 9 May 2025, is described by Beste as a love letter to his family and a meditation on moral responsibility during a period of global uncertainty. Working with producer Iko Niche, he built the record from field recordings of his own past, including snippets of his children and unused music from earlier years, layered against jazz, hip hop and ambient influences. The album features guest contributions from writer and musician Max Porter, vocalist Iko Niche, and Brooklyn based singer aden, who appears on two of the album’s standout tracks.
The twelve track sequence moves between spoken word interludes, glitching electronics and passages of solo piano, with the album’s title drawn from a lyric that grew to represent its wider themes around family and interconnectedness.
